Notes - verb structure

Stop to do versus stop doing

1. He has stopped listening to recorded music.

2. He stopped to listen to the song and then carried on working.

The question to ask is: Which activity has been stopped?

The gerund shows the activity stopped.

The infinitive shows the reason why a different action was stopped.
