Song Lessons

It was good to see so many of you using songs in your self study to help you with your English. Remember that songs can help you with grammar as well as vocabulary and pronunciation. Go to the link below to find song lessons to help you with modals and conditionals. The song links are at the bottom of the page.

FALSE FRIENDS

Some of the most persistent errors this term came from over-translation (e.g. "according to me" doesn't exist in English - IN MY OPINION is used instead)and False Friends.

For example when you say you want to do a "STAGE" you really mean an internship, a work experience placement or appreticeship or when you talk about "actual" events you want to emphasise that they are happening now, present or contempoary.

In English a stage is a place for performing and actual is a synonym for real. Always check your false friends!

Look at the list below - What do they really mean in English?

In fact
Lecture
Eventual
Library
Morbid
Sympathetic

End of Term June 2011

Hi there,

I just wanted to say well done on a good term's work and good luck for your exams.

I was very impressed with the number of people who started blogs this term and the quality of the content. Keep it up. I will continue posting notes and links for you to follow over the summer, so do check the blog and don't be afraid to asks questions and write comments.

Remember - a little, often is the best way to improve your English.

Have a good summer.
