Breaking News For Political Science Students: "Nelson Mandela Becomes The First Politician To Be Missed" - The Onion

Yesterday, Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95. He is possibly one of the most influential figures of modern times and his death highlights our lack of faith in current political leaders. Do you agree?

The Last Lesson

As we discussed at the beginning of the term, every lesson is important. Your final lesson is especially important as it gives you the opportunity to speak directly and privately to your teacher and get valuable personal feedback on your progress. If you have missed an assessment (e.g. essay, presentation or test) it is essential that you attend because this is your last chance to catch up on any work you haven't done. Obviously, the more assessments you have done, the easier it is for me to accurately gauge your progress, so, do make the effort to come to class next week. I shouldn't have to remind you that 70% attendance is obligatory and "going home to study" is not a legitimate excuse for your absence.

If you really are unable to attend (due to sickness, for example), then please make sure you contact me by email on or before the day of your lesson. In your email include a link to your blog, Google docs, dropbox file etc , if you have completed your self study digitally, so I can assess your self study grade. If you have been doing your self study in a workbook or in a handwritten notebook or folder, then please include a brief (250 - 300 word) summary of what you have been doing for self study this term in your email. Also in your email you should discuss the tutorial questions that I posted on Monday.

The deadline for all assessments, emails and self study is 5th December. Anything received after that date will not be considered towards your final grade.

I look forward to seeing you all next week.

Preparing For your Tutorial 2nd - 6th December 2013

The course isn't over with the test. There is still one more, very important lesson to go and the attitude, insights and work you present during your private tutorial could mean the difference between you going on to the next module or repeating the course again. For example, imagine you sit the progress test this week and you are not happy. You find it too hard or you feel you are unprepared. Don't just wait for your bad result and expect to fail. Think about where you went wrong. Revisit the areas you found difficult - in your notes, in the text book or on the internet and come prepared to talk about this in your tutorial. Your teacher can help you - especially if you are the kind of student who has difficulty doing or preparing for written tests.

You can also prepare for your tutorial next week by thinking about the following questions:
  • What have you learnt this semester?
  • What areas have you improved?
  • What areas do you still need to improve on?
  • How are you going to improve your English when the course is finished?

The tutorial is your last chance to hand in or do any course work for final marking (e.g. essays, reports, presentations, speaking assessments or progress tests). You will also be asked to present your self study blog/folder/notebook and talk about the ways you have tried to improve your English independently this term.

Seminar Task

Last year, the phone hacking scandal (illegally listening or intercepting phone calls and text messages) seriously damaged the reputation of several important newspapers in the U.K. Many journalists and editors are now standing trial for their involvement. The U.K. government wants stricter controls on journalists to stop this happening again, however, no one can agree on the the best solution.
What do you think is best:
  • A government appointed regulatory body?
  • An independent regulatory body?
  • A body formed of journalists and editors and other persons in the media?
  • An ombudsman? (For a definition see:  http://definitions.uslegal.com/o/ombudsman/)

Prepare a short (5 minute) presentation on what form of regulation is best for the industry. Support your answer with examples.
You will give your presentation to a small group of your peers. When everybody has presented, you need to decide as a group which form of regulation is best and what powers the regulatory body/person should have?
The aim of your seminar is to present a proposal to the Minister of Broadcasting.

Preparation:
(1) Think about the problems:
  • invasion of privacy - phone tapping/hacking
  • stealing private information e.g. emails, medical records
  • harassment
  • recklessly publishing inaccurate stories
  • maliciously publishing untrue stories

(2) Current Legal Protections:
Which of the above problems are already punished by Criminal or Civil Law? Do you think that is enough protection? Do we need an explicit Privacy Law like the French? Does Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights provide enough protection?

(3) Think about the powers the regulatory body/person should have:
  • force newspapers to print apologies
  • demand corrections to stories
  • impose fines
  • impose exemplary damages

(4) How will the regulatory body work in practice - especially as news stories are spread via blogs and social media?

Research:
The following articles will give you some ideas and background information. Also note any vocabulary and collocations that might be useful for your presentation.

Speaking Skills:
  • Be clear about your aim and what you want to achieve - you only have 5 minutes.
  • Make sure your structure is clear - this will give you confidence - make sure you outline your structure with the use of signposting language.
  • Don't read.
  • Don't speak too fast or in a monotone, "chunk"what you have to say phonetically so you get the intonation right and sound natural.
  • Answer questions diplomatically and politely.

Homework
To prepare for next week's seminar, review the notes you took today. How far do you agree with the ideas expressed in the documentary? If you were a policy adviser in Treasury, what would your advice to the Minister be? Think of legislative measures you could suggest to the Minister e.g. policies on privatisation & deregulation, tougher penalties for tax fraud, policies to encourage and promote social business models, the introduction of a "Robin Hood Banking Tax", a rethinking of benefits and social welfare, raising the minimum wage and/or linking it to a maximum wage, indexing tax rates to increases in inequality.

Now structure your ideas into a short presentation (5 mins) to give to your group.

Covering Letters - Error Correction

Feedback on covering letters

·         Sentences too long. Sentences shouldn’t be longer than 20 words

·         Very limited use of tenses – where was the present perfect to talk about experience?

·         Use precise verbs rather than the verb to be – I am specialized in – I specialized in

·         To be used to + ing

·         Verb structure e.g. apply for

·         Dear Sir/Madam – Yours faithfully

·         Graduate (noun) graduated (past form of the verb)

·         Support your qualities, strengths etc with practical examples e.g. say why you are hard working

·         Don’t just copy formulas – adapt them e.g. As a law school graduate/second year law student…

Which one are you ?
