Next week is an in class writing assessment - an academic essay.
Your topic is:

Discuss a law which you think needs to be changed. What are the main problems (legal and/or social and/or political) and how could the law resolve them?

We will write the essay in class in the next lesson (3rd April) and the essay will be worth 25% of your final grade. Your essay must include references - citations in the text and a bibliography at the end. Please bring with you one or two books, journals or articles (IN ENGLISH) which you wish to use as references. Articles printed off the internet are useful here but remember to use only reliable sources. WIKIPEDIA is a good starting point but SHOULD NOT BE YOUR MAIN REFERENCE. You will also be allowed dictionaries and I will help you with planning and referencing. BUT YOU MUST COME TO THE LESSON PREPARED WITH ALL THE MATERIAL YOU NEED.

If you are not sure what to write about - maybe you could consider the following topics:
Internet Piracy
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/aug/14/robert-levine-digital-free-ride?INTCMP=SRCH
Euthanasia

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT ATTENDANCE
As there are an increasing number of you asking to go early each week, While I have no objection to letting you go, I feel it is important to remind you that leaving before the class officially finishes has consequences on your attendance. Like last term the University requires that you attend at least 70% of the course, however your attendance is based on a full lesson. If you leave after the break that is only half a lesson and if you leave at 6pm that is two thirds of a lesson. Even if you attend all 11 lessons in the course, if you leave at the break time every week, that amounts to only 50% attendance. This is a 3 hour lesson that finishes at 7pm - I do what I can to let you go early by giving you a shorter break. There will be times when you have a very good reason to leave early (e.g. a doctor's appointment) but you should arrange sporting, family or social commitments for after 7pm. If you do not have 70% attendance you will not pass this course and you will have to repeat it.

The Trouble With Accents

Many students find different accents hard to understand but it is the same for native speakers too! If you live in America sometime people from Britain are incomprehensible and vice versa. This year's Academy Award winner, Meryl Streep, is particularly famous for learning languages and using different accents in her films. Below are two videos featuring the actress. In the first she plays the "accent" game on the Ellen Show and the second features clips from her many films. Can you hear the difference in the accents?
