LUISS End of Term December 2011

Dear Students,

Congratulations on completing another productive English course. If you could not attend a tutorial this week, you can send me an email and I will reply with your results.

With exams coming up in January and February you are going to be kept pretty busy, but try to find some time to keep your English up. Remember you don't have to do a lot - a little, often is the most effective way to maintain your level. Downloading a podcast and listening to it while you are walking to class or waiting for a bus is just one of the many things you could do.

Keep checking this blog from time to time for useful links and suggestions and for GP1 students, remember you can use the My Language Leader Lab, digital platform whenever you want.

In the meantime have a Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2012.

For students in GPI Group 11, Module B2+1 (Wednesday 11:30 am) we will take a look at the work that you have done on the My Language Leader Lab digital platform, and discuss any problems you have encountered using it and your overall opinion of the site and it’s usefulness.

If you gave your presentation today write a couple of paragraphs about how you thought it went. Did you achieve your aims? What do you think the audience remembered from your presentation? If you had to do the presentation again what would you change to make it better? Write about 100 words.  




Next week there will be a Progress Test. The test will start at 2pm sharp and will last for 2 hours. PLEASE BE ON TIME.


The test will cover all the work that we have done in class over the last 10 weeks. 
The test will be in 6 parts

  1. Legal principles
  2. Error correction (modals, articles, countable and uncountable, verb structure)
  3. Negotiation language
  4. Writing a covering letter
  5. Grammar: open cloze (see today's lesson)
  6. Summarizing, Referencing & Citations
As we discussed in the first lesson your final grade will be determined this way:

We will do the writing in class time next week, you can use dictionaries and ask me for assistance but you must complete the task in 30 minutes. Please find an article and bring it along with you next week. Make a copy to hand in with your finished summary. The article can be on any LEGAL topic and should be about 300 - 400 words long - any longer and you will have difficulty finishing it within the time and word limits set. If you were not in class today you must still do the task. Make sure that you check the links above and catch up on the work you have missed.

Interesting Film For Economics & Political Science Students Especially.

This Week Sky Cinema is screening the HBO film, Too Big To Fail.  Directed by Curtis Hanson ( L.A. Confidential), the film tells the true story of the events surrounding the fall of the Lehman Brothers in 2008 which signalled the start of the current financial crisis. The story focuses on Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, played by William Hurt, and the relationship between big business and government.

URGENT MESSAGE FOR GPI GROUP 11 B2+1

Dear Students,

Remember that your self study work and all the work that you do on My Language Lab counts towards 25% of your final grade. The last time I checked, only Camilla, Lorenzo, Davide, Chiara, Mariagiovanna, Francesco and Mariachiara had completed some or all of the work set.

Francesca, Sara, Ignazio, Giuseppe, Antonio, Cristina, Cecilia, Lara, Matteo, Flavio, Luigi, Bianca and Giulia have yet to complete any work and Marco, Dario and Corrado are yet to register.

I know that some of you have had problems logging on so contact Andy as soon as possible to try to resolve these issues. If you haven't registered you must do so immediately. In the meantime you should keep up to date with the links, homework and self study tasks that I set on this blog.
