The Importance of English (?) - All Students

This week the President of the European commission, Jean - Claude Juncker, got an enthusiastic response when he told an audience of diplomats that he would continue his speech in French because English was ‘slowly but surely’ losing its importance.

Do you agree with Juncker or do you think that he was merely taking a swipe at British Prime Minister Theresa May over Brexit?

International contracts are drafted in English Common Law.
English is the predominant language in business, commerce, tourism and international relations. It's the default language for international communications.
Of course, other languages are taught. Of course, they are used. Obviously none enjoy the “predominance” (of English?!?).
Spanish (for example) is a popular language, spoken by vast numbers, but it is not the language of business and law inside or outside the EU.
He then gave a speech in French, which was understood by a minority of the Continent.

Yes, I think the thing to remember is the importance of English as a second language spoken between various groups of non-native speakers, that won't change regardless of the political, social and cultural implications of Brexit.
