1.     Parliamentary sovereignty

2.     The separation of powers

3 types of governmental function – legislative, executive and judiciary

3.     The rule of law

We are ruled by rules not rulers.

4.     Discharging the burden of proof

Criminal – beyond reasonable doubt

Civil – on the balance of probabilities

5.     Ignorance of the law is no excuse

6.     Better 10 guilty persons go free than 1 innocent person is convicted

7.     Proportionality

The punishment must fit the crime

8.     Justice must be seen to be done

Every judgment must be unbiased and can not appear biased
